Arab World Wants New Mission to Syria

RIA Novosti

19:55 12/02/2012 CAIRO, February 12 (RIA Novosti) - The League of Arab States is currently considering a proposal to send a new mission to conflict-torn Syria including U.N. monitors, the Egyptian television said on Sunday.

The league also wants to ask the world community to tighten its sanctions on Damascus.

The discussion came a week after Russia and China blocked UN Security Council resolution on Syria.

An Arab League ministerial meeting began in Sunday in Cairo. The event is being held behind closed doors. Search for ways to settle the Syrian months-long uprising are on the agenda of the meeting.

The Arab League has been at the forefront of regional efforts to end violence in Syria. The group put forward a plan that Assad agreed to in December, and then sent monitors to Syria.

The League withdrew its monitoring mission from Syria in January because the regime failed to stop 10 months the bloodshed.
