NATO Rules Out Syria Action

November 01, 2011

VOA News

NATO says it has no intention of taking military action in Syria, after closing it's seven-month campaign to protect civilians in Libya.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Monday the alliance has ruled out any intervention in Syria.

He condemned President Bashar al-Assad's deadly crackdown on dissent and urged the government to accommodate what he called the "legitimate aspirations" of the Syrian people.

Assad has warned the international community against intervening in Syria, saying any action would splinter the Middle East.

The United Nations says the death toll from seven months of anti-government protests has topped 3,000.
