Syrian Forces Renew Assault On Homs
September 07, 2011
Activists and residents say several people have been killed or wounded in fresh attacks by Syrian troops in the central city of Homs, which has seen intense protests against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
They report heavy gunfire throughout the night and today in the morning as military reinforcements arrived in pursuit of activists and antigovernment protesters.
A statement by the activists' Homs City Neighborhoods Union sent to the Reuters news agency says that "most land and cell phone lines and the Internet have been cut off. Tanks moved in at dawn and began firing heavy machine guns randomly at houses."
It is not immediately clear how many were killed in today's violence in Homs.
Foreign reporters are not allowed to report from Syria.
