Syria Says 40 Police Killed In Northern Town
June 06, 2011
Syria's state television says 40 policemen have been killed in attacks by "armed groups" in a northern town.
It said earlier that security forces had clashed with hundreds of gunmen who had set up blockades in Jisr al-Shughour.
Rights activists say at least 35 people have been killed since security forces began conducting military operations there on June 4.
More than 1,200 people have reportedly died in Syria since an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's rule erupted in March.
