Snipers Reportedly Kill Soldier In Syria's Restive Banias
April 14, 2011
Syria's state news agency (SANA) says snipers have killed a soldier and wounded another in the coastal city of Banias amid tensions after protests against President Bashar al-Assad.
SANA said on April 14 that a group of snipers opened fire on soldiers as they were on patrol. The agency put the blame on an unidentified "criminal gang."
Security forces have encircled Banias, 280 kilometers northwest of Damascus since deadly clashes there on April 10.
Reports said four people were killed and 17 wounded in the clashes on April 10. SANA says nine soldiers have been killed in Banias since the protests started.
