DAMASCUS/MOSCOW, April 3 (RIA Novosti) - Syrian President Bashar Assad has appointed a former minister to form a new Cabinet, Syrian state-run television reported on Sunday.

Adel Safar was the agricultural minister in the government that resigned last week in an attempt to appease demonstrators demanding radical change in the country.

Safar is expected to announce his new Cabinet within two days, the television said.

Protests have been raging in Syria since March 15. Tens of people have died so far. The Syrian leadership pledged last week to implement economic and political reform in the country.

Thousands of Syrians staged demonstrations after Friday prayers north of the capital Damascus and in the south of the country. Security forces opened fire on the protestors, killing at least nine people, according to a witness and a human rights activist.
