Diplomats: US, France to Target Syria in UN Resolutions
19 October 2005
Diplomats say the United States and France are preparing two U.N. resolutions that will criticize Syria for meddling in Lebanese affairs.
One resolution would target Syria for its alleged role in the February 14 assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri in Beirut.
Damascus has repeatedly denied any link to the killing, but diplomats say a U.N. report set for release next week is expected to implicate Syria in the attack.
The other resolution would deal with U.S. allegations that Syria has been funneling weapons and stirring up unrest in Palestinian camps in Lebanon. A separate U.N. report on that issue is also set for release next week.
The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity, saying the timing and the wording of the resolutions is still being negotiated.
