- Bulgaria and Slovakia Reject Missile Reduction August 20, 1997 - The Clinton Administration asked the country to hasten the destruction of the weapons, banned under the 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The Slovak Defense Ministry issued a statement that their SS-23 missiles "still carry out their role in the defense system," and that their elimination would be "premature." The Slovak spokesman stated that the missiles' elimination "would have to be a political decision."
