Tehran, Jan 2, IRNA -- Iran took diplomatic offensive against Saudi kingdom over death of the Shia religious leader.
Parliamentary commission on national security and foreign policy demanded the Foreign Ministry to downgrade diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia.
Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Saudi Charge d'affaires to Tehran Ahmed al-Muwallid to convey Iranian protest to the Saudi government over death of Shia religious leaders.
Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian strongly protested to the assassination of Sheikh Nimr.
The Saudi Interior Ministry said earlier in the day that 47 people convicted of what the ministry called terrorism have been executed.
Prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr was among those executed.
