Russia's new advanced weapons systems, including Oreshnik and Poseidon, will safeguard the country for many years, the chairwoman of Russia's Federation Council says.
In remarks on Tuesday, Valentina Matviyenko said the Oreshnik missile and the Poseidon nuclear-powered underwater drone, as well as the Burevestnik missile would secure Russia's safety well into the future.
She stressed that Russia now has the capability to respond to modern challenges "harshly and seriously," adding that these advanced systems reflect years of presidential focus on strengthening national defense.
"We have the means to respond to modern challenges. We can respond harshly and seriously. The emergence of our state-of-the-art weapons - Oreshnik, Poseidon, and Burevestnik - ensures the security of Russia and its people for many years to come. Imagine what would have happened if, from his first day in office, our president had not been concerned with strengthening security," Matviyenko noted.
Oreshnik is an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads. It is said to fly at hypersonic speeds (over Mach 10) and can carry multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles.
Poseidon is a nuclear-powered, autonomous underwater vehicle (UUV) capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. It can travel long distances at great depth underwater and is considered a strategic retaliatory weapon, especially for second-strike scenarios when other delivery systems may be compromised.
Burevestnik is a nuclear-powered cruise missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, with reactor propulsion that gives it potentially unlimited range and allows it to loiter for long periods, fly at very low altitudes, and evade defenses with unpredictable flight paths.
Matviyenko also stressed that Russia no longer fears sanctions, arguing that the country is internally "monolithic," supported by a strong government, a developed economy with a stable financial system, and a powerful military-industrial complex.
She also emphasized that Russia possesses "the best army in the world," reinforcing her comment that its long-term security is assured.
Russia outpaces entire EU in arms production: Expert
On Monday, Alexander Mikhailov, head of Russia's Bureau of Military-Political Analysis, also said that his country's defense industry now outpaces the entire united European military-industrial complex in weapons and ammunition production.
He stressed that Europe, despite its half-billion population and numerous advanced defense industries, "cannot currently compete with Russia's combined defense sector. This is a significant advantage."
"At the macro level, Russia outperforms the entire defense industrial complex of united Europe in weapons and ammunition," Mikhailov noted.
He further emphasized that even if negotiations on the Ukraine war bring a peace agreement and fighting in eastern Ukraine ends, global demand for these weapons will remain strong.
Mikhailov also noted that the price of a 155mm NATO-standard shell has risen from about $2,000 before February 2022 to $8,000-$8,500 today, a 4.5-fold increase driven by the war.
"Russia's foreign contracts now total around $60 billion, and after the end of the special military operation, Russia is expected to earn even more from arms exports," Mikhailov added.
Previously, Rostec CEO Sergei Chemezov said that Russia's current arms production far surpasses past levels, with no other country producing as many shells and airdrop bombs.
