Russia has unveiled its new nuclear submarine, the "Khabarovsk", designed to carry the massive torpedo-shaped nuclear-powered Poseidon drone.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that a ceremony attended by Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and other top brass was held in Severodvinsk to showcase the submarine.

"Today is a significant event for us: the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Khabarovsk is being launched from the slipway of the renowned Sevmash shipyard," Belousov announced.

"Carrying underwater weapons and robotic systems, it will enable us to successfully accomplish missions related to ensuring the security of Russia's maritime borders and protecting its national interests in various parts of the world's oceans," RT news agency quoted Belousov as saying.

Belousov said the vessel still has to complete a series of sea tests, and wished its crew and builders further success.

Former Chief of the Russian Navy's General Staff, Admiral Viktor Kravchenko, told Russian media that the submarine has been specifically designed and built to hold the nuclear-powered Poseidon drone.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced last week that Poseidon cannot be intercepted by any means. Poseidon, in Greek mythology, is the god of the sea.

Putin announced on Wednesday that Russia had successfully tested its state-of-the-art drone, as well as the Burevestnik cruise missile.

Addressing wounded soldiers at Moscow's Mandryka Hospital, Putin announced that "for the first time, it was possible to launch a nuclear power engine" for the underwater torpedo drone system, a report said, adding that "in terms of speed and depth, it has no analogs in the world."

The announcement came amid a stall in Ukraine peace negotiations and discussions of potential US Tomahawk supplies to Kiev.

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had instructed the Department of War to start testing nuclear weapons, citing strategic competition with Russia and China.

In the meantime, the Kremlin said it does not see itself in an arms race with the United States.

Russia is "still not" in an arms race with the US, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, when asked to comment on the recent arms tests.
