President Gitanas Nausėda, together with the Presidents of Latvia and Estonia, held a traditional meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the United Nations General Assembly.
The Baltic leaders discussed with the UN Secretary-General global security challenges, the consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine, the current situation in the Baltic region, the work of the Security Council, and the need for UN institutional reform.
Gitanas Nausėda stressed that Russia's aggressive actions pose a threat to all of Europe. By deliberately violating NATO member states' airspace, Russia continues down on a dangerous path of provocations. At present, there are no grounds to believe that Moscow is genuinely willing to negotiate peace.
"Only greater military support for Ukraine and stronger international pressure on Russia can stop its reckless behavior," the President said, emphasizing that all three Baltic States are committed to providing Ukraine with annual support amounting to at least 0.25 percent of GDP. He also underlined that the EU's upcoming 19th sanctions package will target Russia's oil and gas revenues.
The President noted that Lithuania is actively participating in the Coalition of the Willing and is prepared to send a contingent of troops to Ukraine if an agreement is reached on a ceasefire and security guarantees.
He also expressed firm support for the UN Secretary-General's initiative to revitalize the United Nations on the occasion of its 80th anniversary and to give the organization fresh momentum.
According to the President, it is essential to expand political dialogue, adapt UN institutions to a changing global reality, and build a more effective international system. Special attention, he stressed, must be given to the work of the UN Security Council, which is not only obstructed but often completely paralyzed by an aggressor state exploiting the privileges of permanent membership.
