On September 24, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov convened a meeting with the heads of the foreign ministries of the member states of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) - Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Mali Abdoulaye Diop, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad of Burkina Faso Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad of the Republic of Niger Yaou Sangaré Bakary.
During the meeting, a comprehensive range of issues concerning priority areas of collaboration between Russia and the AES were addressed, including the deepening of political dialogue and the enhancement of cooperation in security, trade, economic, cultural, and other fields. A detailed exchange of views ensued regarding the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region, with particular emphasis on countering terrorist threats. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to fortifying foreign policy coordination on international platforms, including the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly.
