Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated today, September 24, during a meeting in New York with U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, that the recent messages from the United States about Russia being defeatable are correct and require swift, decisive joint action from both Europe and the U.S. to be realized.

"The U.S. President's statements yesterday, highlighting Russia's poor economic situation and Ukraine's potential to win the war, are entirely accurate. Estonia has always maintained that with sufficiently strong political and economic pressure, Russia can be defeated," Tsahkna said during the meeting.

"What's needed is rapid and resolute joint action from Europe and the U.S. to reduce Russia's budget revenues and ultimately force it to end its aggression against Ukraine and provocations against NATO allies," the Foreign Minister added. "We are working to ensure that the European Union swiftly adopts the 19th sanctions package, decides on the imposition of tariffs, and moves forward with the use of Russia's frozen assets." According to Tsahkna, political, economic, and military support for Ukraine must continue simultaneously.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister also thanked Kellogg for the U.S. efforts that led to the release of political prisoner Allan Roio from a Belarusian prison.

Today, the Foreign Minister also participated in a meeting between EU ministers and representatives of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). As part of the UN High-Level Week, he will also attend the Ukraine Friends Group event, meetings of ministers from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the G20, and a high-level event on artificial intelligence. The Minister will open an event organized by Estonia for the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC), which Estonia currently chairs, and will deliver a lecture on European security at Columbia University.

There will also be a meeting of Nordic-Baltic (NB8) foreign ministers with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha‎, as well as bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of Tunisia, Algeria, and Colombia, and with UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock.
