On 12 September, the European Union decided to extend targeted sanctions against around 2,500 individuals and entities responsible for undermining Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.

Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that EU sanctions are applied for six months at a time, meaning they must be reviewed and extended every six months.

"Estonia supports the extension of sanctions. There is absolutely no basis for easing sanctions against Russia or individuals linked to its aggression. Russia's objectives - to subjugate Ukraine and to reshape Europe's security architecture - have not changed. Russia continues its war of aggression against Ukraine," said Tsahkna, adding that as soon as in December it will also be necessary to extend the sanctions under which the EU has frozen €200 billion worth of Russian central bank assets.

On 17 March 2014, the Council of the European Union introduced restrictive measures in response to actions threatening or undermining Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence. Since then, under this regulation, the EU has imposed sanctions on around 2,500 individuals in connection with Russia's aggression against Ukraine. These include Russia's dictator Vladimir Putin, members of the State Duma, senior officials, military personnel, businessmen and oligarchs, propagandists, arms industry companies, and individuals responsible for the deportation of children.
