Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met today, 27 August, with Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže in the framework of the joint session of the Latvian and Estonian governments. The meeting focused on the upcoming informal meeting of European foreign ministers this weekend, including steps to increase the cost of war for Russia.
"Europe is doing more and more to raise the cost of war for Russia, and it is also necessary to move forward with the use of Russia's frozen assets. The Baltic states have a legal basis for using the frozen assets, and we hope to see European countries follow our example," Tsahkna told Braže. The ministers also discussed possibilities to counter sanctions evasion jointly and underlined the need to quickly move forward with the 19th sanctions package.
"It is clear that Putin's claims of wanting peace have been nothing but a façade - in reality, he continues to pursue his goal of subjugating Ukraine and reshaping Europe's security order to serve his own interests. Therefore, we must stay the course: to fully support the victim of aggression and pressure the aggressor to end the war," Tsahkna stressed.
The ministers also confirmed that Estonia and Latvia strongly support the immediate opening of European Union accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
As part of the meeting, they visited the NGO Christian Youth Home, which provides substitute home services for young people and children who have lost their home or parents.
Today at Tartu Town Hall, the foreign ministers will also present the Estonian and Latvian Foreign Ministries' Language Award. The aim of the award is to raise awareness of Estonian and Latvian, and to recognise translators, linguists, teachers, and language project leaders for their contribution to the promotion of both languages.
