On July 29, the Norwegian Charge d'Affaires in Russia R.A. Johansen was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was handed a note of protest over the unlawful Norwegian restrictions imposed in July against fishing vessels operated by Russia's Norebo and Murman Seafood companies, which are fishing in the exclusive economic zone of Norway in accordance with the 1976 bilateral intergovernmental agreement on mutual relations in the field of fisheries.
It was declared to the Norwegian side that the said unfriendly measures were a gross violation of the bilateral agreements on fisheries, which undermined the years-old effective system that governed and regulated the procurement of commonly-owned reserves of fish in the Barents and Norwegian seas. Oslo's irresponsible actions are fraught not only with a collapse of the entire system of bilateral relations in the field of fisheries but also with negative consequences for participants in these relations. They also jeopardise the further rational use of marine biological resources in the Northern Atlantic.
In this connection, the Russian side focused on the need for Norway to perform in good faith its obligations to the Russian Federation under the 1976 fisheries agreement and refrain from steps restricting Russian fishing vessels' lawful activities in the exclusive economic zone of Norway. If Oslo is unprepared to return to implementing the conditions stipulated by the 1976 agreement, the Russian side will undertake the necessary measures to defend Russian fishing interests.
