Today 16 May, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with German Minister of State for Europe Gunther Krichbaum on the sidelines of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) in Vihula. At the meeting, the ministers discussed the need to increase defence spending, the role of the Baltic Sea states in ensuring the security of the region, and strengthening bilateral co-operation.
"Estonia and Germany are close Allies and strategic partners who work closely together both in supporting Ukraine and strengthening Europe's security architecture," Minister Tsahkna said. The meeting covered the continuing provocations of the Russian shadow fleet in the Baltic Sea, which force like-minded countries to act more decisively. "We must act to slow down the war machine of the aggressor state, and at the same time work hard with the countries around the Baltic Sea to counter aggressive provocations against our critical maritime infrastructure, cyberspace, and societies," Foreign Minister Tsahkna added.
After the bilateral meeting of ministers, the ministerial meeting of the Baltic Sea States began to discuss the security of the region and the Baltic Sea. Estonia currently holds the presidency of the CBSS and the meeting of the foreign ministers of the CBSS is chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna.
