On December 17, at the behest of the Jordanian side, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov engaged in a telephone conversation with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ayman Safadi. During this conversation, Mr Safadi briefed him on the activities of the League of Arab States following the recent ministerial meetings in Amman concerning the situation in and around Syria.

Ayman Safadi expressed high regard for the alignment of positions between the Arab world and the Russian Federation, which advocates for the prompt normalisation of the Syrian situation. This stance is predicated on ensuring the legitimate rights of all Syrians without exception, as well as the unconditional respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Syrian Arab Republic.

The Ministers underscored the urgency of initiating a national dialogue involving all political and ethno-confessional forces within Syria, in accordance with the fundamental principles of political settlement as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254. In this context, they emphasised the necessity of expediting the implementation of the plan by UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen to convene a meeting in the near future. This meeting would involve all Syrian parties, with the participation of representatives from key regional and extraregional states capable of exerting a positive influence on the facilitation and advancement of the national reconciliation process. Moreover, it would address the immediate resolution of the humanitarian issues facing the population and establish conditions conducive to the dignified return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.

Sergey Lavrov and Ayman Safadi concurred on the importance of maintaining contact regarding the Syrian issue and other facets of the increasingly complex situation in the Middle East.
