On December 12, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Following up on the most recent Russia-Arab states contacts at various levels, the foreign ministers pressed for holding an international meeting at the earliest convenience in order to launch an inclusive national dialogue in Syria with the involvement of all political and ethnic and religious group in strict accordance with the principles outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2254. They accentuated the importance of ensuring the continuity of transitional authorities to maintain Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity.
The ministers agreed that UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen should take the lead in organising such a meeting as discussed during the Astana Troika (Russia, Türkiye, and Iran) ministerial meeting in Doha on December 7, which Pedersen attended. Sergey Lavrov and Abdullah Al Nahyan agreed to work with representatives of all Syrian groups and key players to expedite the implementation of this initiative.
Russia is also working on these matters with the foreign ministries of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other Arab countries.
