On October 11, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in the 19th East Asia Summit (EAS) in Vientiane,Laos.

The Russian side reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and reinforcing the architecture of cooperation mechanisms built by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as part of the broader goal of strengthening the multipolar world order and creating a safe, conflict-free environment in Asia as a crucial prerequisite for sustainable development and equitable cooperation.

The Russian representatives noted the serious risks associated with the establishment of bloc structures alternative to ASEAN in the region, including military and military-political blocs. They emphasised the growing threat of militarisation in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in the context of NATO's expanding presence there.

In addition to the Russian initiatives to create a pan-regional mechanism for collective response to epidemic threats and deepen cooperation in the tourism industry, previously formalised as the leaders' decisions, it was proposed to develop several areas that are new for the EAS: supporting remote territories and fostering social and cultural connections.

In his remarks, Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's unwavering focus on forming a single seamless space for joint development and security in Eurasia by aligning the potentials of multilateral mechanisms for constructive cooperation, above all the SCO, ASEAN, and the EAEU.
