Ocean 2024 CPX: Northern Fleet's all-arms forces fire Vulkan and Oniks cruise missiles to hit mock enemy in Barents Sea

13.09.2024

As part of the Ocean 2024 strategic naval drills, the all-arms forces of the Northern Fleet launched strikes at a hard-to-hit target position simulating enemy speed ships in the Barents Sea.

The missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov fired anti-ship missiles from the designated area in the Barents Sea and a Bastion coastal missile system launched strikes from the missile deployment area on the Kola Peninsula.

A Tu-142 long-range anti-submarine aircraft of the Northern Fleet's mixed aviation corps provided target designation to the command post of the all-arms strike group.

The missile firing area was closed to civilian navigation and aviation flights in advance. Ships of the Kola Flotilla's all-arms forces closed the area.

The strikes were carried out by Vulkan and Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles at ranges of over 200 and about 180 kilometres, respectively.

According to objective control data, all the targets were successfully hit.

The Ocean 2024 exercise includes elements of protecting coastal civilian facilities and the Northern Fleet garrisons, command and control over all-arms groups of forces in their area of responsibility, as well as comprehensive use of precision weapons, advanced and modern samples of weapons and military hardware.

The Northern Fleet forces operate in the western and eastern Arctic maritime zones, where they perform tasks in accordance with their primary purpose.

According the training plan of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, formations and units of the Russian Navy have started taking part in the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise, which is to last until 16 September 2024. The exercise, which is one of the most important operational and combat training events of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2024, is to be conducted in a bilateral format under the overall command of Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.

More than 400 warships, submarines and support vessels, over 120 naval aircraft, some 7,000 units of weaponry, military and special hardware, and more than 90,000 personnel participate in the drills, which take place in the waters of the Pacific and Arctic oceans, Mediterranean, Caspian, and Baltic seas.

The Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise is aimed at checking the readiness of the senior staff of the Russian Navy to operate all-arms groups of forces in the areas of responsibility, to solve non-standard operational tasks, to make full use of high-precision weapons, advanced and modern weapons and military hardware in the practical part of the exercise, and to expand cooperation with the navies of partner countries to perform joint maritime missions.
