Arctic Group of Northern Fleet deployed in eastern areas of Arctic Ocean

During the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise launched today, the Arctic Expeditionary Group of Forces (Troops) of the Northern Fleet was deployed in eastern areas of the Arctic Ocean.

The group includes the large anti-submarine ship Vice Admiral Kulakov, from which the forces are controlled, the large landing ship Aleksandr Otrakovsky, the rescue tugboat Altay, and the tanker Sergei Osipov.

During the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise, the Arctic Expeditionary Group of Forces (Troops) of the Northern Fleet is to perform tasks on ensuring security of objects of the coastal infrastructure of the Russian Federation in the Arctic.

Military command and control units of the Northern Fleet are to practise actions of controlling forces and units when organising a defence of military and civilian infrastructure of the Arctic coast of the Russian Federation, protecting objects of maritime economic activity and strategic communications taking into the account of the modern naval warfare.

In the course of practical actions, the Arctic Group is planned to examine areas of possible combat actions, conditions of deploying the All-Arms Forces (Troops) of the Fleet, weaponry, and technical means in the Arctic maritime zone, as well as conducting joint special operations to restrain and eliminate terrorists.

According the training plan of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, formations and units of the Russian Navy have started taking part in the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise, which is to last until 16 September 2024. The exercise, which is one of the most important operational and combat training events of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in 2024, is to be conducted in a bilateral format under the overall command of Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev, the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.

More than 400 warships, submarines and support vessels, over 120 naval aircraft, some 7,000 units of weaponry, military and special hardware, and more than 90,000 personnel participate in the drills, which take place in the waters of the Pacific and Arctic oceans, Mediterranean, Caspian, and Baltic seas.

The Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise is aimed at checking the readiness of the senior staff of the Russian Navy to operate all-arms groups of forces in the areas of responsibility, to solve non-standard operational tasks, to make full use of high-precision weapons, advanced and modern weapons and military hardware in the practical part of the exercise, and to expand cooperation with the navies of partner countries to perform joint maritime missions.
