Baltic Fleet's training ship Smolny arrives in Angola

10.09.2024

Today, the Baltic Fleet training ship Smolny, which is carrying out a long-distance mission for maritime practice of naval cadets, has arrived with an unofficial visit to the port of Luanda, the Republic of Angola.

During the stay in the port of Luanda, the ship's crew will replenish water, fuel, and food supplies, conduct a technical inspection of the ship. The seamen and cadets from the Baltic Fleet will also meet with Angolan naval personnel in the port, go on a series of excursions and take a look at the historical sights of Luanda, the country's largest political, cultural, financial, and industrial centre.

For the ship's crew, the visit to Angola is the fifth foreign port for unofficial visit during this long-distance mission. Previously, in the period from 27 July, the Smolny visited the ports of Havana (the Republic of Cuba), La Guaira (the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela), Cape Town (the Republic of South Africa), and Walfish Bay (Namibia).

The training ship's long-distance sea mission is a part of the maritime practice of naval cadets of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. Future naval officers carry out a training programme on the ship, in particular on communication and shipping. In total, more than 300 cadets take part in the sea mission.
