Baltic Fleet's training ship Smolny arrives in Republic of South Africa

29.08.2024

Today, the Baltic Fleet training ship Smolny, which is carrying out a long-distance mission for maritime practice of naval cadets, has arrived with an unofficial visit to the port of the Republic of South Africa.

The crew will replenish its supply of water, fuel, and food supplies and conduct a technical inspection of the ship during the stay. Moreover, seamen of the Baltic Fleet and cadets will meet with South African naval personnel at the port, make a series of tour trips, and get acquainted with the historical sights of South Africa's second largest city.

The visit to the South African port is the third call to a foreign port during this long-distance mission. The ship has previously made unofficial visits to the port of Havana, the Republic of Cuba, and La Guaira, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Future naval officers on the ship Smolny undergo a training programme, in particular on communications and marine navigation. In total, more than 300 cadets take part in the mission.
