Explosion In Siberia Causes Fire At Russia's Largest Oil Refinery
By RFE/RL's Russian Service August 26, 2024
Several Telegram channels reported on August 26 that a major explosion rocked Russia's largest oil refinery, located in the Siberian city of Omsk, sparking a fire at the facility. The reports carried videos showing flames and clouds of smoke rising from the Gazpromneft-ONPZ facility. The refinery's administration confirmed the reports, saying that the fire was under control. It remains unclear what exactly caused the explosion. Several oil refineries located in Russia's western regions have been under Ukrainian drone attacks since January. The distance from Ukraine's eastern border to Omsk is more than 2,000 kilometers.
