
Russian Deputy Defence Minister Aleksandr Fomin holds talks with Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services

On 28 March 2024, in Naypyidaw, the Republic of Myanmar, the Russian delegation headed by Deputy Russian Defence Minister Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin, held talks with Chairman of the State Administrative Council / Prime Minister / Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services of the Republic of the Union Myanmar, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
The Deputy Defence Minister on behalf of Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, congratulated Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on the 79th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Union of Myanmar and thanked for the traditionally warm welcome and hospitality that the Russian delegation was treated with.
'Today, Tatmadaw is the region's most effective armed forces equipped with modern weaponry and military hardware, and this, Senior General, is definitely your merit', Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin said.
During the talks, the Deputy Defence Minister of the Russian Federation commended Myanmar for its friendly relations, which is Russia's long-standing and most important strategic partner in the Asia-Pacific region.
'In the face of the unparalleled sanctions campaign launched by the 'collective West' both against Russia and against Myanmar, our countries continue to fully support each other and act in a spirit of strategic partnership and alliance,' Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin stressed.
The sides also discussed in detail the implementation of numerous bilateral military cooperation projects, outlined steps towards further strengthening of traditionally friendly Russian-Myanmar relations in a spirit of strategic partnership.
'We lay a solid foundation for the further development of relations between the armed forces of the Russian Federation and Myanmar. This year we have more than 50 bilateral military cooperation events planned, including mutual visits by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces branches, as well as joint operational and combat training projects,' Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin stressed.
Deputy Defence Minister of the Russian Federation noted that the Russian military department expects to see high representation of Myanmar at events organised by the Russian Ministry of Defence in 2024: 'This is the Main Naval Parade, 2024 International Army Games, ARMY 2024 International Military-Technical Forum, 12th Moscow Conference on International Security, as well as the Ocean 2024 strategic command post exercise, in which the Myanmar side has already confirmed the participation of its observers'.
The talks were held in the open and trusting manner of Myanmar-Russia relations, which helped to strengthen bilateral contacts in the defence sphere.
