12.03.2024

The Pacific Fleet's detachment of ships, made of the missile cruiser Varyag and frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, has begun to practise the Sea Security Belt-2024 joint naval exercise with ships of the Iranian and Chinese navies.

The exercise takes place in the waters of the Gulf of Oman of the Arabian Sea. Its primary purpose is stated here to be to practise safety in maritime economic activities.

During the exercise, the combat ships of the three countries will jointly manoeuvre and conduct firing at surface and air targets, as well as hone elements to liberate the ship hijacked by the pirates.

In total, the exercise involves more than 20 ships, support ships, and warships of the Russian Navy, the Iranian Navy, and PLA Navy. Naval aviation helicopters are also widely used.

For Reference:

The Sea Security Belt-2024 International Naval Exercise is held for the sixth time. It first took place in the Arabian Sea waters in 2018.

The ships of Russia, Iran, and China participate in the exercise on a permanent basis. Last year, the frigate Admiral Gorshkov was involved in the exercise, the world's first standard carrier of hypersonic missile weapons.

For the first time, representatives of Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Oman, India, and South Africa will participate as observers in the exercise.
