Comment by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna on the joint statement of three Baltic States on elections in Russia

Today, the three Baltic States simultaneously summoned the chargés d'affaires of Russia to present a joint statement on Russia's upcoming 'elections' and express strong condemnation about the killing of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Ten years after the annexation of Crimea and two years after the launch of the ongoing bloody war in Ukraine, Russia's sitting president Vladimir Putin is holding 'elections', the result of which the entire world already knows. These elections are neither free nor fair.
Putin is a war criminal and a dictator who is consistently violating international law. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide and crimes against humanity.
The killing of his loudest and most influential critic Alexei Navalny in a penal colony sends a clear message to anyone running against Putin - opposing the war will kill you.
Today, my Latvian and Lithuanian colleagues and I made a joint statement with an opinion on the elections that have nothing to do with democracy.
We will continue to stand firmly with the joint position of the European Union, supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity. We condemn and do not and will not recognise the elections nor their results in Ukraine's territories temporarily annexed and occupied by Russia.
