Statement by Russian Defence Ministry
18.09.2023
On 18 September 2023, Russian airspace control systems detected an aerial target approaching the State border of the Russian Federation over the Barents Sea.
To identify the aerial target and prevent a violation of the State border of the Russian Federation, a MiG-31 fighter aircraft from the air defence duty force of the Northern Fleet was scrambled.
The Russian fighter jet identified the aerial target as a U.S. Navy R-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft.
As the Russian fighter approached, a foreign military aircraft made a U-turn away from the State border of the Russian Federation. There was no violation of the State border of the Russian Federation.
The flight of the Russian fighter aircraft was carried out in strict compliance with international rules on the use of airspace over international waters without crossing air routes or coming dangerously close to an aircraft of a foreign State.
