Sergei Shoigu discusses grain deal and situation in Syria with Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs

01.09.2023

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu during the talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Hakan Fidan discussed the grain deal and joint efforts in Syria. The Head of the Russian defence department congratulated the head of the Turkish foreign ministry on new appointment and stressed that in his previous position Russia and Turkey had managed to achieve great results both for the two countries and the whole world.

'Our efforts were focused on the grain deal for the last two months in which we did our best. The grain deal was initiated by esteemed President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Not by our fault the implementation of the grain deal was stopped. We can say only one thing, that if promises made to Russian are fulfilled, the implementation of the grain deal will continue. In reality, it turned out more difficult, than create new corridors, new land routes,' said Sergei Shoigu.

He stressed that Russia is wiling to continue strategic bilateral cooperation with Turkye to solve a set of issues. 'By that I mean matters connected with efforts in Syria and that project we started there, namely improving relations between Turkey and Syria with our participation, then counterparts from Iran joined these efforts. It is the first time in Turkish and Syrian, and even Russian history when heads of defence department, heads of intellegence agencies meet to address practical, humanitarian issues.

In turn, Hakan Fidan stressed long successful work with Sergei Shoigu. 'For many years, we solve most critical issues and always demonstate political maturity. This shows us how deep and strategically aligned the relationship between Russia and Turkey really is,' said Fidan.
