On May 31, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was on a visit to Maputo, during which he was received by President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi. He also held talks with Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources Carlos Mesquita and co-Chair of the Russia-Mozambique Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique Manuel Goncalves.

The meetings and conversations that took place confirmed Moscow and Maputo's intention to further strengthen traditionally friendly bilateral relations and multifaceted partnership. At the same time, mutual interest was expressed in closer foreign policy coordination, expansion of trade, economic and investment cooperation, intensification of interparliamentary and humanitarian ties, as well as contacts along the interparty line. Productive cooperation in education was discussed, including the education of qualified personnel for Mozambique at Russian universities.

When discussing current issues on the international and African agendas, Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's interest in providing the necessary assistance to Mozambique in implementing its declared goals as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2023-2024.

Sergey Lavrov shared Russia's principled assessments and ideas on the Ukrainian conflict stressing that Moscow was always ready for a serious search for a peaceful settlement in and around Ukraine.

The integration processes on the African continent and Mozambique's participation in them and the significant contribution to the activities of the African Union were noted, as was strengthening the coordinating role of Maputo in the implementation of major pan-African initiatives, such as the Continental Free Trade Area. When considering the state of affairs in the hot spots of the continent, Sergey Lavrov appreciated the steps taken by the Mozambique leadership to counter the terrorist threat in the north of the country.

The Foreign Minister informed the Mozambican leadership about the preparations for the second Russia-Africa summit in July in St Petersburg, designed to determine the areas for further development of comprehensive and multifaceted cooperation with the African states on a long-term basis.
