On April 14, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in the CIS Foreign Ministers Council Meeting in Samarkand, the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The heads of CIS countries' foreign policy agencies exchanged opinions on topical international issues and charted high-priority intra-CIS cooperation guidelines for 2023. They praised interaction between national foreign ministries throughout 2022.
Sergey Lavrov set forth Russian assessments of the global situation in great detail. He focused on facilitating global and regional security and noted that countries of the collective West were attempting to interfere more actively in the domestic affairs of CIS states. He informed the partners about the progress of the special military operation in Ukraine.
Following the meeting, the sides adopted decisions aiming to further strengthen political, cultural, humanitarian and educational integration ties. Notably, the cities of Minsk in the Republic of Belarus and Gyumri in the Republic of Armenia were named CIS sports capitals in 2023 and 2024, respectively. In turn, Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia was named as a backbone CIS organisation for training journalists.
The meeting participants will submit a number of approved documents to the CIS Heads of Government Council and the CIS Heads of State Council for approval.
