On February 9, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Sudan. In Khartoum, he met with President of the Supreme (Sovereignty) Council of the Republic of the Sudan Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Vice President of the Supreme (Sovereignty) Council of the Republic of the Sudan Mohamed Dagalo, and had talks with Acting Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq Ali.

During the meetings, the parties thoroughly considered ways to further strengthen the traditionally friendly Russian-Sudanese ties. At the same time, both Moscow and Khartoum reaffirmed their interest in intensifying the mutually beneficial partnership, including in the context of implementing the agreements reached following the regular meeting of the Russian-Sudanese Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation in Moscow in August 2022. Particular emphasis was placed on promoting joint projects in mineral extraction, agriculture and energy.

When discussing trends in Sudan's domestic politics, the Russian side expressed support for the current government's efforts to stabilise the country, and stressed that any interference in Sudanese internal affairs is unacceptable.

The parties exchanged views on the Middle East and African agenda with an emphasis on the need to resolve the remaining crisis situations by political and diplomatic methods. They also noted their readiness to strengthen foreign policy coordination between Russia and Sudan at the UN and other multilateral platforms.

The parties agreed on the importance of an expeditious resolution of problems in Khartoum's relations with South Sudan, achieving progress in reaching a comprehensive political settlement in Libya and Syria, and finding a just solution to the Palestinian problem on a well-known internationally recognised basis.

Special attention was paid to the preparations for the second Russia-Africa Summit to be held in St Petersburg in July 2023. The parties noted this forum's particular importance in terms of giving an additional impetus to the consistent expansion of Russia's multifaceted partnership with African states.

The Foreign Minister informed the Sudanese leaders of Russia's approaches to resolving the situation in and around Ukraine in the context of the special military operation, the Kiev regime's refusal to negotiate and the collective West using Ukraine as a tool of deterrence against Russia. The parties expressed a shared opinion on the need to lift the illegitimate sanctions that obstruct the supply of Russian food, fertilisers and energy to the developing countries that need them the most.
