Question: The Jordanian authorities have banned a number of Russian air carriers from flying through their airspace because of questions about their insurance coverage. Is this decision politically motivated?

Maria Zakharova: Due to the restrictions imposed by the aviation authorities of Jordan under pressure from the European Commission, some domestic airlines that carry tourists from Russia to Egyptian resorts and back have to delay flights and develop alternative flight routes.

The Russian Federal Agency for Air Transport and the Foreign Ministry are actively working to resolve this problem. At the same time, we proceed from the fact that Jordan is a friendly country of Russia and we do not regard the decision taken in Amman as politically motivated and directed against the interests of our country.

We believe that we will be able to allay our partners' concerns as regards the safety of Russian aircraft, which have all the necessary documents to make transit flights through Jordanian airspace, including insurance policies issued in accordance with ICAO recommendations. Russia fully complies with its flight safety obligations under the 1944 Convention on International Civil Aviation and the intergovernmental agreement on air traffic concluded between Russia and Jordan in 2009.
