Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov

On December 6, 2022, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, who is visiting Moscow to take part in the 12th meeting of the Russian-Turkmen Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation.

The two officials discussed current issues of bilateral relations, as well as topical regional and international affairs. Moscow and Ashgabat reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing the policy of expanding bilateral cooperation, in keeping with the Declaration on Expanding Strategic Partnership Between the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan signed on June 10, 2022.

The two parties discussed the schedule for the upcoming political contacts and events, including between members of the two country's parliaments, as well as the prospects for cooperation in trade, the economy, culture and education, including cooperation on major initiatives, such as establishing Russian-Turkmen University and the construction of a building for the Russian State Drama Theatre in Ashgabat.

The two officials noted the traditionally high level of coordination between Russia and Turkmenistan at major international forums, including the CIS, the Central Asia plus Russia Dialogue format, the five Caspian littoral states format and the UN, as well as coordination of their efforts as part of cooperation between Ashgabat and the SCO.

The parties signed the Programme of Cooperation Between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan for 2023-2024, which provides for regular consultations between relevant departments of the two ministries.

The talks were held in a traditionally warm and friendly atmosphere and became yet another step towards strengthening the strategic partnership between Russia and Turkmenistan.
