On September 21, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in a trilateral ministerial meeting in the Astana format held on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
During an in-depth exchange of views on the current situation in Syria and around it, the ministers emphasised the need to achieve sustainable stabilisation on the ground and peace and security of the Syrian Arab Republic by restoring its sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. They also discussed comprehensive international humanitarian assistance to all Syrians who need it without any discriminating preconditions, including within the framework of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2642, which stipulates not only cross-border supplies for Idlib but also the implementation of early-recovery projects to rebuild civilian infrastructure and ensure stable domestic routes from Damascus to all parts of Syria.
Following the trilateral meeting, the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran and Turkey held consultations with UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen. They discussed the progress of the political process, which the Syrians themselves are conducting with UN support in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. A major role in this process should be played by the Constitutional Committee, which is an indispensable venue for a direct intra-Syrian dialogue on the key aspects of the country's future.
