Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken

On August 16, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by telephone with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the initiative of the American side.

They discussed the developments taking place in Afghanistan after the head of state fled the country, the government fell apart and the de-facto regime change got underway.

The Secretary of State informed his Russian counterpart of the initiatives by the US administration aimed at evacuating the US embassy staff in Kabul and addressing urgent humanitarian needs in view of the ongoing situation.

Sergey Lavrov shared with his colleague Russia's assessment of what is happening, as well as about Russian embassy's contacts with representatives of all the main political forces in Afghanistan for bringing about stability and order.

The Russian Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State agreed to continue consultations involving representatives of China, Pakistan and other interested countries, as well as the UN, in order to create conditions for launching an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue in this new environment.
