Russia has filed an official protest with the United States over the recent breach of its maritime border by a US navy destroyer.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that it had filed the protest with Washington over the Tuesday incident, which it called a provocation designed to disturb peace.
Russia's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that a Russian warship had intercepted a US Navy destroyer that had breached its territorial waters in the Sea of Japan.
"The large anti-submarine ship of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Vinogradov stopped the US Navy destroyer John McCain, which was violating the Russian border in the Peter the Great Gulf," the ministry said.
According to the statement, the US Navy destroyer was at least two kilometers past the maritime border.
The US Navy, however, denied any wrongdoing.
The US ship returned to neutral waters after Russia's anti-submarine destroyer issued a warning.
US military planes and warships are repeatedly intercepted by the Russian military while approaching Russian borders over and in the Black Sea. The Tuesday interception in the Sea of Japan was a rare incident.
