Not Russia's Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad region, but the deployment of US arms and personnel in Europe threatens EU's security, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – All current threats to the European security are a result of US defense policy conducted in the past 10 years, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
US State Department spokesman John Kirby earlier urged Moscow not to deploy S-400 air defense systems and Iskander ballistic missiles in the Kaliningrad region as the move would allegedly destabilize the European security.
"It is not Russia, but the massive deployment of weaponry and personnel of a clearly 'non-European origin' in Europe that threatens the European security today," ministry's spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said commenting on Kirby's remarks.
"The safeguarding of national security in Russia is a sole prerogative of the country's leadership. Therefore, it would be better if [Kirby] kept all complaints or suggestions on how, where and when we must be ensuring our security to himself."
Konashenkov reminded about the deployment of US missile defense systems in Poland and Romania, as well as the upcoming deployments of NATO's fighting units to Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland.
"All current threats to the European security are a result of US' military policy conducted in the past ten years," he concluded.
