Syria Anti-Terror Campaign Major Test for Russian Modern Military Equipment
President Vladimir Putin said that the Russian anti-terrorist campaign in Syria has become a major test for the country's modern military equipment, especially for aircraft.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian anti-terrorist campaign in Syria has become a major test for the country's modern military equipment, especially for aircraft, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.
'Of course, a serious test for the [Russian] modern warfare technology, especially aircraft, was its use against terrorists in Syria,' the Russian leader and the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces said.
Putin added that the brand new weaponry that have recently been received by the Russian Armed Forces were already in use with the Russian units, and are being regularly verified during exercises and military training operations.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting against numerous opposition factions, including a so-called moderate opposition, and extremist groups, such as Islamic State (ISIL), which is banned in a range of countries including Russia and the United States.
Russia has been assisting the Syrian forces in their anti-terror campaign, conducting airstrikes against ISIL targets in Syria at the request of Assad since late September 2015.
