Russian activity in the Arctic region aims to create normal living conditions there, not to militarize it, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Monday.
ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) – In recent years Russia has started to actively develop the economy of its northern territories, including the extraction of hydrocarbons and the development of the Northern Sea Route, which is increasingly becoming an alternative to traditional routes from Europe to Asia.
'The aim of the restoration of military infrastructure in the Arctic macro-region is not the militarization of the Arctic, but to create favorable, I would say, peaceful conditions for life and work, for the region's economy and cooperation,' Rogozin said, speaking at the international forum 'The Arctic: present and future.'
According to a special report by the Emergencies Ministry, the total value of the minerals concentrated in Russia's Arctic region exceeds $30 trillion. The ministry experts predict that Russian oil and gas production will be mainly concentrated in the Arctic sea shelves in the future.
The Russian Defense Ministry is actively engaged in the construction of military infrastructure in the Arctic region aimed at securing national security in accordance with the country's military strategy through 2020.
