The Russian Defense Ministry initiated the ninth regimental combat unit of the S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile system during a ceremony in Astrakhan region.

After passing successful drills the hardware proved to be in great condition and according to reports it will now be sent on combat duty to Russia's Far East. Moreover, the CEO of the Jan Novikov Group said that by the end of this year, the military will have two more sets of the S-400.

The Triumph missile system is especially in demand and orders for it have been placed years ahead. In order to fully and timely meet the demands of the military, the S-400 and more advanced S-500 system has maximum IT-technologies.

The weapons manufacturing plant in the city of Omsk has in particular installed robotic line for production of electronics for the anti-aircraft missile systems. The presentation of the first robotized center is planned for early next week.

What makes the S-400 so special is its intelligent radar, which can "see" just about everything both in the air and on the ground, and can easily discern even a tiny aircraft from, say, a truck moving on the ground.

During the drills, the Triumph managed to shoot down a missile target flying at a speed of 2800 meters per second and another at an altitude of 56 kilometers.

Each S-400 can simultaneously engage up to 36 targets, with up 72 missiles ready to fly at a moment's notice. The S-400 uses three different missiles to cover its entire performance envelope. These are the extremely long range 40N6, long range 48N6 and medium range 9M96 missiles.
