Russia's new Armata tank's crew may eventually be reduced to two - manufacturer

KUBINKA /Moscow Region/, June 18. /TASS/. The crew of Russia's new generation main battle tank based on the Armata platform may eventually be reduced from three to two, the chief designer of the vehicle's manufacturer Uralvagonzavod, Andrei Terlikov, has said on the sidelines of the Army-2015 weapons show near Moscow.
'The high degree of automation allows for coming close to reducing the crew of the Armata platform-based tank from three to two,' he said.
Armata is a heavy unified tracked platform to be available in different configurations - a main battle tank, an infantry combat vehicle and an armored recovery vehicle.
The new generation tank boasts an unmanned turret, fully digitalized control and an isolated armored capsule accommodating the crew. Armata's main weapon is a 125 mm gun. In principle, the vehicle can be armed with a 152 mm gun, too. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin earlier said Armata's shell is capable of piercing one-meter-thick armor.
The platform has both front-and rear-mounted-engine layouts.
