'Principally new ships, equipped for operations in the difficult Arctic conditions will be designed and built in the medium term for the Northern Fleet,' Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy said

MOSCOW, June 1. /TASS/. Russia's Northern Fleet will be in the near future supplied with principally new ships equipped for Arctic operations, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Viktor Chirkov said on Monday.

'In 2015 the Navy received more than 50 ships of different class that part of which will be assigned to the Northern Fleet. Principally new ships, equipped for operations in the difficult Arctic conditions will be designed and built in the medium term for the Northern Fleet,' Chirkov said.

Congratulating the navy men on Northern Fleet Day, Admiral Chirkov said that special attention has been given and will be given further to the fleet development.

'The Northern Fleet development plans envisage the work to maintain at a qualitatively high level the grouping of nuclear submarines, which form the basis of the strategic nuclear forces, as well as rearmament and re-equipment of the Northern Fleet formations included in the general-purpose forces. The under-ice navigation practice of nuclear submarines will be continued,' the Navy commander said.
