Russia-US ties at rock bottom: Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow's relations with Washington have hit rock bottom and will remain so for a long time.

Lavrov made the comments on Monday in an open lecture on Russia's foreign relations at the Foreign Ministry's headquarters in Moscow.

"This new period in our relations will be a lengthy one," said Lavrov, noting that "there have been no attempts to improve relations" from the Western side.

The top Russian diplomat added that it would take Washington a considerable period of time to undergo a total re-evaluation of its place in the world.

According to Lavrov, the US must have to accept the current trend of multi-polarization in international politics and the rise of new power centers in order to improve its ties with Russia.

"A totally new picture of the world is emerging, which doesn't fit the ideas of Western domination of the world economy, finance and politics," said Lavrov.

Relations between Russia and the West soured after Ukraine's Black Sea peninsula of Crimea joined the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.

Tensions further increased after Ukraine launched deadly military operations in mid-April to silence pro-Russia protests in the country's mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east.

The US and the European Union accuse Russia of destabilizing Ukraine and have imposed a number of sanctions against Russian and pro-Russia figures. Moscow, however, rejects the accusation.
