EU sanctions 13 Russians, two companies
12 May 2014, 15:37 -- Ministers of foreign affairs of 28 EU member countries have included another 13 people and 2 Crimean companies to the sanctions list against Russia, a European diplomatic source told TASS on the margins of the ministerial meeting on Monday.
'As an addition to the black list, there were named 13 individuals and two Crimea-based companies,' the source said, adding that the measures will come into effect on Tuesday.
The head of Russia's lower house of parliament argued on Monday that sanctions against Russia cannot resolve the Ukraine crisis. 'We believe that it is mistake to link further efforts to settle the situation in Ukraine to sanctions against the Russian Federation,' State Duma Chairman Sergei Naryshkin said during a meeting at the Duma with leader of German party The Left and member of parliament Gregor Gysi.
Naryshkin said the German government's decision to cut down on political and economic relations with Russia 'surely can't solve the Ukrainian problems but will surely inflict significant damage on our bilateral political and economic cooperation.' He credited Gysi with 'balanced and quite objective' judgments on the Ukraine crisis. Gysi responded that he considered anti-Russian sanctions and scaling down Russian-German relations an erroneous policy.'
Gysi added, however, that there are various positions on the Ukraine issue within his party. He said he personally stands for the immutability of international law. 'A piece of territory cannot be alienated from a country without the consent of that country,' he said. 'This is my assessment of all cases of recent years - northern Cyprus, Kosovo, and Crimea as well.' Gysi said Russia has justifiable concerns on Western policies, including the policy of NATO. 'NATO has become an alliance that engages in interventions,' he said. Quite a short while ago, NATO claimed it would be careful with its enlargement but then extended its membership to 12 countries, Gysi said.
'I realize that the West, including the German government, would like Russia to pull its troops even further from the Ukrainian borders, but in that case NATO mustn't deploy its troops, aircraft and weapons closer and closer to the Russian borders,' he said.
