Russian Pacific Fleet vessels enter Indian Ocean

8 April 2014, 11:34 -- The Russian Pacific Fleet's large anti-submarine ship Marshal Shaposhnikov, tanker Irkut and rescue vessel Alatau have sailed through the Strait of Malacca and entered the Indian Ocean, the fleet's spokesman Captain 1st Rank Roman Martov told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

'The ships will make a port call in the Pakistani port of Karachi during their mission in the Indian Ocean,' he said. The unit's ships and vessels participated in several episodes of the Komodo-2014 multilateral naval maneuvers between March 29 and April 3 as part of their deployment in the Pacific Ocean, which began in mid-March.

During the exercises, Russian sailors and their colleagues from 16 countries of the Asia-Pacific region took part in maneuvers at sea and helicopter drills, as well as joined a simulated operation to extend medical aid to persons injured in an imaginary natural disaster and participated in simulated clean-up efforts.
