Russian arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport skeptical about possibility of US sanctions

26 March 2014, 10:30 -- The Russian state arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport hears about the possibility of US sanctions every year but expects the US senators to be reasonable, Rosoboronexport CEO Anatoly Isaikin said at a press conference on the sidelines of the FIDAE 2014 international aerospace show in Chile.

'There are enough senators there who would want to impose a ban on Russia's arms sales. We hear such calls every year,' Isaikin said in reply to a request from Interfax in commenting on a US senator's proposal that US companies and organizations be forbidden to deal with Rosoboronexport.

'I can say that Rosoboronexport has been under unilateral sanctions of the US for years, but the only effect on the sales is their growth,' he said. The only legitimate form of arms sales prohibition is a UN Security Council resolution, Isaikin said. 'We comply with such decisions,' he said.

The US is unlikely to be able to obstruct the production and sales of Russian weapons to other countries. 'I think the US has some experience of interaction with Russia, both positive and negative, and I believe reason will triumph,' Isaikin said. Cooperation between Russia and the US is beneficial to the rest of the world, Isaikin said, pointing, in particular, to Russian-US interaction in the counterterrorist operation in Afghanistan.

'This positive experience is of great significance, primarily as concerns combat against terror threats. I hope this aspect will prevail,' he said.
