Russia will have to respond to possible US sanctions - Russian Foreign Ministry
4 March 2014, 21:31
Russia will respond in the event of sanctions over the Ukraine situation being imposed against it by the United States, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich.
'We have explained to the Americans on many occasions, with facts in hand and legal excerpts, why their unilateral sanctions do not fit into the standards of civilized inter-state relations. They fail to produce the needed effect. That means, we will have to respond, though not necessarily by mirroring (such sanctions),' Lukashevich said in a commentary over claims by US officials they would impose sanctions against Russia.
'As ever in similar situations provoked by Washington's ill-considered and irresponsible actions, we stress: this is not our choice,' the commentary says.
'Washington's recent threats to 'punish' Russia for its principled stance on the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine are upsetting not just because of the lack of knowledge of history among those who have been enthusiastically debating this topic,' the commentary said.
'What is worse is that these US politicians and statesmen seem to be deficient of adequate perception of the real state of affairs in a fast-changing multipolar 21st century world,' the Russian diplomat said.
'Each time when something happens that cannot fit into the mossy US schemes, there are those who do not mind grabbing the sanctions bludgeon,' he said.
'Already this is happening at a reflex level. We are being threatened with 'serious consequences' and told about freezing our military cooperation, suspension of dialogue for developing new frameworks for bilateral trade and investment, cancellation of scheduled contacts at various levels,' Lukashevich said.
'New measures are being promised, even despite the fact that damage will inevitably be mutual,' he said. 'Emotions and annoyance over their failure to impose their will on others and the ideas of what is the 'right' and 'wrong' side of history prevail over common sense and logic,' the Russian Foreign Ministry official said in his commentary.
